Colour Correction

When looking to cover problems, such as redness, many people simply rely on their foundation or concealer. This is often not the most effective way of dealing with the concern, as many layers may be needed, and it and quickly begin to look cakey. Instead, the best way can be using different coloured concealers or based to counteract a problem. To understand how they work, we need to look at the colour wheel.

Put simply, you use the colour opposite the one you are trying to cover. For example, to cover redness, you would use a green concealer to cancel out the red. This then makes it easier for the concealer to cover the problem. Here's a list of the different colours of concealers and bases, and what you would use them for.

Green

Green neutralises red. A green concealer will help cover any redness caused by spots. A green primer will cover larger red areas, like redness in cheeks, such as rosacea. Benefit Cosmetics also have a selection of yellow concealing products which act in the same way.

Salmon

Salmon cancels out blue and purple tones, making it idea for covering under eye dark circles on darker skin tones.

Yellow

Use a yellow concealer to help cover dark circles on lighter skin.

Red

Red is used to cover blue and green tones. This usually isn't used much in every day make up, but it's crucial when you're trying to cover tattoos, as the black lines will very rarely be hidden by make up alone.

Purple

Purple helps transform sallow looking skin by cancelling out the dull yellow tones. A purple primer is good to have, as it helps tired looking skin.
