Lip liners do three things -
- They create a barrier between your lipstick and the skin around your lips, making sure that your lipstick doesn't bleed into any fine lines
- They act as a base for your lipstick to cling to.
- They can be used to correct or change lip shape.
I will be the first to admit that I am lazy when it comes to my own lip liner. Even when it comes to red lipsticks (which are usually the worst culprits) my lipsticks don't bleed. I'm sure this will change as I get older, as when you age, fine lines can start to appear around the lip lines.
However, when I'm working it's a completely different story. Using a lip liner creates a sharp, crisp line, which is essential on photoshoots. Even on nude lipsticks, it creates a tidier, more finished look.

Using lip liner on special occasion makeup and shoots where the makeup needs to last is also vital. Rather than just lining the lips, I also fill in the entire lip with the liner, before layering lipstick on top. This gives the lipstick something to cling to, as lip liners are usually more long wearing than lipsticks.
Types of Lip Liners
There are two types of lip lipers. Coloured liners that go on the lip line, and clear ones that go outside the lip line.
Coloured liners are the most common type of liners. They either come in the form of a pencil that you sharpen, or a twist up pencil. They come in lots of different shades and formulas. I prefer lip liners that are a little softer, so that they don't tug at the skin around your lips. If a liner is too dry and pulls at the skin, you're less likely to be able to get a smooth line.
Recommendations
Clear lip liners are a waxy liner that you use around the outside of your lip line to stop colour bleeding. These are a love/hate product, and personally I love them. I usually use these as well as a coloured lip liner with lips/lipsticks that bleed a lot.
Application and Correction
The great thing about lip liner, is that it allows you to draw on the lips that you want to have, in a way that lipstick doesn't allow you too. Because of the preciseness of a pencil, you can get the exact shape that you want.
