Types of Lipstick

Lipsticks typically come in five main types/formats, and there is some cross over, where some fit in two catagories.

Standard Lipsticks

It took me ages to try and figure out what I should classify these as!  These are your most common type.  A push or twist up stick of colour.  You can get them in just about every colour and finish you could ever imagine.  I tend to favour those that have good staying power, but are very moisturising (I have the driest lips ever).  You can either apply this straight from the tube, or for more precision, use a lip brush.

Armani Rouge D'Armani Lipsticks - These are my all time favourite lipstick formula.  They're moisturising and comfortable to wear, but this doesn't impact on their staying power.  Most of the shades are medium to full coverage.

Maybelline
Colour Sensational Vivids - If you're looking for bright colours, look no further.  These are incredibly pigmented, and the forumla is nicely hydrating.

Picture
Dior Dior Addict Lipstick - For lipsticks on the sheerer end of the scale, I love these.  They're not super moisturising, but for sheer lipsticks they really do have good staying power.  Some of the lipsticks are closer to medium coverage if you want a bit more colour.

Lipstick Pencils

Clinique were probably the first brand to make it big with these, and most brands have come out with a similar format product since then.   These are far thicker than normal lip pencils, and there's no getting them confused.  They range from sheer to opaque in opacity, and most boast moisturising balm like properties.

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Colour Balm - These are sheer in colour, and as the name suggests, highly moisturising like a lip balm.  Great for hot days when you don't want to wear much makeup!

Picture
Bourjois Colour Boost Lip Crayons - These are more pigmented that there Clinique counterparts, but they're still super moisturising.  They have the added bonus of SPF15 too.

Picture
Urban Decay Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Colour - As well as being highly moisturising, these are super bright, and opaque in colour.  They range in finish from glittery to cream.

Liquid Lipsticks

Liquid lipsticks used to have a bit of a bad name.  They were long lasting, but incredibly drying, and I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole!  Fortunately, formulas have improved and now you have long wearing colour, without having all the moisture sucked out of your lips.

Armani Lip Maestro - Another lip hit from Armani.  These are highly pigmented, long wearing, and extremely comfortable.  Can't say a bad word against these!

Picture
Guerlain
Rouge G L'Extrait Lip Colour -These are certainly at the higher end of the price scale, but the beautiful casing screams luxury.  The formula is just as high quality.  The liquid lipstick quickly drys down to a matte finish that has excellent staying power.

Picture
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar These liquid lipsticks are slightly different from the previous two I mentioned.  They come in a squeezy tube, and are applied with a lip brush.  The tiniest spot of colour goes a long way.  They're designed to be mixed, so there are a few weird colours in there, but this just means that the colour range is endless.

Lip Stains

Lip stains are great if you want a lip colour that's going to last a long time.  These will get through drinks and a meal better than most other lip products.  Sometimes I use a stain as a base, so that as lipstick wears away there's still some colour left.  The only problem with stains is that they're not terribly hydrating.  You can get round this by topping with a clear gloss or balm.

Benefit Lip and Cheek Stains - I mentioned this is the blush section, and they deserve another shout out here.  These come in three colours; a sheer red, and then slightly more opaque pink and coral.  These are one you'll wanna use a lipgloss on top of.

Picture
Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain - For stains, these are wonderfully moisturising.  They're also far more opaque than most stains.  If you can get round the strange peppermint smell, these are one of the best stains I've come across.

Picture
No.7 Stay Perfect Lip Stain - These are another opaque stain.  This stain comes in a felt pen type applicator, and has the added bonus of having a balm on the end to solve that hydration problem.

Tinted Lip Balm

If you're suffering from dry lips, you probably won't want to be putting a lipstick on them.  But that doesn't mean you can't have colour.  Tinted lip balms add a hint of colour, will all the moisturising benefits of a balm.

Recommendations

Picture
Lush It Started with a Kiss Lip Tint - Lush lip balms are one of my favourites, and this red-tinted version is great for a soft red lip that works on most skin tones.

Picture
Burts Bees Tinted Lip Balms -These are available in four different colours.  They're all sheer, and add just a hint of colour.  The shea butter base ensures that lips are comfortably hydrated all the time.
